When there is a feast for the eyes to study and the mind to appreciate, there is a tendency to skip quickly from one thing to another, taking in a little about a lot. But on a second take, given one single item to explore, the eyes and mind will study in depth and this guest bathroom by Yorkshire Design Associates intrinsically draws you to the detail. Natural pattern in the grain of the Statario marble contrasts with the high gloss Hermitage Bisazza mosaic and the metallic Hayon freestanding vanity basin. All are bold and individual on their own, yet together they punctuate the room to get you thinking and keep you interested. Its fun and it works.

Growing importance is being placed on the bathroom as a place not only for cleansing, but also of rejuvenation. It is no longer necessarily the smallest room in the house and requests for open spaces bridging the bedroom, bathroom and dressing area are increasing. Furthermore, bathroom design is following a trend first started with kitchens; architects now want to get involved and designers want to put their brand to it. Indeed, interest in bathroom design has rocketed and the best designers are all embracing a three dimensional approach, layering the floor, walls and ceilings for a more engaging look.

Yorkshire Design Associates design all aspects of interiors for exclusive domestic and commercial customers. Creating an ambient, sensory experience in the bathroom, we source organic materials such as limestone, timber inlays and semi precious finishes like gold, copper and mother of pearl and set the scene with concealed lighting. Stylish brassware, not necessarily available on the high street, adds that little bit of polish.

Investing in the bathroom

How often would an average homeowner change their bathroom? Every 10 to 15 years maybe. So what is the best marker for setting a budget? To establish a budget good designers will always establish what the customer is trying to achieve from the outset. For example, do you want a full refit that will last you for the next 15 years or are you refurbishing with a view to adding value to the house and increasing your chances of selling on.

A good benchmark is to establish your budget as a percentage of the value of your home. For example, a £200,000 home deserves at least £10,000 spending on the bathroom and indeed many clients take this towards the ten percent mark of £20,000.

Recesses in Bathrooms Interiors

Recesses add depth to the room, creating a three dimensional layer that can create space via shelving, frame key pieces of brassware and add interest to a basic bathroom. The use of natural limestone with a high quality (waterproof) American Walnut vanity top creates the necessary colour contrast.

Clients brief

"The original bathroom was tucked away at the back of the old bedroom and the dressing area was a large space begging to be maximised. It wasn't so much that the areas were difficult to work with but that the order or layout of the bedroom, en-suite and dressing room were overlooked by yesteryears architect. It was agreed the new bathroom should be a focal point, a room that you spent time in and one that cemented the clients love for style, elegance and technology. There'd be high end European brassware, layering of the floor, walls and ceilings and a statement bath in the middle of the room from which to look out over the gardens."
